CHICK OF THE MONTH - GRETA!

October 2024

Greta was among our first chickens, here on the farm. She's a pearl leghorn hen and after school, she started out at The Nunnery, and worked her way up to Mother Hen - a free range position, which allowed her to start a family. After hatching her first clutch of eggs, she redefined "fierce" as we understood it. She was ready to go toe-to-toe with anything at all - regardless of size or circumstance - to protect her chicks.

A loving and generous mother, Greta waited until day 44 to spar with her own offspring for food and send them packing from her nest - her comb by then had entirely faded and her pure white feathers had become so filthy she'll never need to worry about being eaten by anything at all discerning - not even after infinite hours in a dust bath. She's earned protected status.

Greta spends her days wandering the yard, looking in on her various business ventures - she's the owner and CEO of Mother Clucker's Easter Egg Manufacturing Company, located at The Nunnery. She spends time each morning tutoring young pullets on nesting box etiquette, and directs the Egg Song Choir - just after her egg break.

Over in the industrial area, Greta manages the Section Egg Apartments in The Aviaries development. There, she performs routine maintenance and oversees rent checks, on behalf of The Company. By mid-afternoon, she's around to the back of the house to see what the bitches are up to - and try to score some dog food before heading to a meeting at the Treehouse Community Center.

Most evenings, Greta can be found at The Water Bowl-a-Rama, picking up a few extra kernels of corn, behind the tap. Her quick wit and dry humor make her a favorite among the locals - who all assume she's joking, but aren't quite sure.

Long after the sun has gone to bed, she heads to the porch to check for tacos before settling in for the night. She counts her eggs and tucks them in, and drifts into restless dreams.
